Signs of spring

Published by twriter at 8:20 am under fruit, plants, spring Edit This

While asparagus is usually the first indicator of spring, I am always delighted when the first fruits begin to show up in my garden. Here in the northeast (zone 4/5) it’s still quite early and the hardiest of plants are just beginning to make their appearances. The lettuce is getting thicker, beans are starting to grow taller, and my favorite of all — strawberries are starting to ripen. I’ve had my eye on those little beauties for a month now, watching the bees buzz around the little white flowers and seeing the first green berries start to make their way out, and now we actually have enough to harvest:

Strawberries

While I won’t be making strawberry jam anytime soon, they will still be enjoyed and savored, eaten out of hand with dreams of many, many more to come.

I love strawberies, but would not have any idea how to grow them. Besides, my dogs would probably eat them. But seeing this picture of them, now I have to go to the store and get some to make strawbery shortcake with whip topping.

They’re super easy to grow. Just plant in a sunny spot and mulch with some straw, and you’ll have berries. I do have a super high-tech anti-varmint system though - basically some chicken wire - but it does keep the rabbits out. I’ll explain more in a blog post to come!

rabbits, I had problems with squirrels actually. LOL It was my first attempt and they ate nearly 30 plants. I was so mad.

We’ve been harvesting strawberries for a few weeks now. We have Junebearers, but they ripened much sooner than June. I have 6 plants, and it’s my daughters favorite thing to do in the morning. We only got 4 strawberries last year when the plants were new, but this year we got a TON! Much better than store bought.
